Paul Hagen / Philadelphia Daily News this morning wrote:
THE SAN FRANCISCO Giants had just signed lefthander Barry Zito, the crown jewel of last winter's free-agent pitching market. Josh Byrnes, general manager of the division rival Arizona Diamondbacks, could only watch and envy the move.

"People have got to be thinking about the Giants as the favorites now," he told the San Francisco Chronicle. "They had a chance to separate themselves from everyone else in baseball with their moves this offseason and they did . . . This absolutely puts them over the top."

There was nothing Byrnes could do about it, either. He didn't have the $126 million over 7 years that San Francisco lavished on Zito.

link

Paul, here's the original Byrnes quote from December 28, 2006:
Former A's outfielder Eric Byrnes, who now plays for Arizona and will face Zito often, predicted Zito will do well in San Francisco.

"People have got to be thinking about the Giants as the favorites now," Byrnes said. "They had a chance to separate themselves from everyone else in baseball with their moves this offseason and they did. Now that they have the two Barrys, this absolutely puts them over the top. Everyone in the NL West will be shooting at these guys."

Henry Schulman and Susan Slusser / San Francisco Chronicle

That's ERIC BYRNES, you doofus Paul Hagen, not Josh Byrnes! There is a difference. These freaking east coast newspapers don't have a clue about what happens west of the Mississippi.

This reminds me of watching all of the other teams' broadcasters this past season (I have MLB EI so usually get the home team's feed), and laughing at how frequently they thought that our manager was Brewers GM Doug Melvin.

Perhaps the newspaper couldn't afford a really good sportswriter and settled for this dude instead. Wink

The point in this case is that getting his facts wrong totally undermines the central point of what he wrote, so don't expect to see a correction or a retraction.

I sent him an e mail, but no response.

I sent him an email as well. I'm half-tempted to forward the article to the Diamondbacks organization so they can ask for a retraction.

Stupid.

That's actually a really good idea. If I was JB I wouldn't want everyone to think that I was gaga over Zito.

You are missing the point.

Read the opening of the article and the tone. Does he write that at all if he realized the quote was Eric, no Josh?

Also, it's his JOB to be factual, and correct, as it is that of his editors.

He richly deserves this criticism. He did a very poor job at his job, and made what could be construed as belittling comments about Josh Byrnes in the process.

But I'm sure he'll be glad to know you are in his corner. Wink

Yup....and we pointed out his mistakes.

But your point....which is clear from your first post....is that you think we are being hypocrites for criticizing him for his mistake......

I'm sorry about my first comment but it irritated me that someone got called an idiot for one article. I admittedly never read anything by the guy but i believe this is the first time i heard of him. So maybe all his articles are like this. My intent wasn't to call anyone a hypocrite here.

I'm not sure I'd want Hagen, but I'd pay good money to get Bickely out of town.

I don't think Josh will object to my posting his reaction to Paul Hagen's misinformed misquote:

Not good. That's a fairly significant error and goes against the grain from my normal rhetoric regarding free agent expenditures.

Josh

The comment from JB "The FA pitching market is fools gold" comes to mind. Wink
