God I hate Cubs fans. I dont know why. Hell I think both Santo and the Hawk should be in the HOF. I also think Steve Stone should be in somebodys front office.

20,000+ will show up the next few nights and I will enjoy telling them at least the DBACKS have won a title in MY LIFETIME!

I say lets go for the SWEEP!

Hell, my Grandpa is 92, and HE hasn't seen the Cubs win a W.S. in HIS lifetime.

I remember watching a game on TV a few years ago when the Cubs were in town. A really old lady sitting in the ground level seats just beyond the right field wall was holding up a sign in her electric wheelchair that said "I was alive in 1908" Definitely one of the best signs I have ever seen

Micah Owings enters his start today with an NL-leading 11 hit batters, a byproduct of his determination to keep hitters honest by using both sides of the plate. He feels he has to pitch inside.

“I don’t think you can be effective, especially if you are a guy who doesn’t throw in the mid to upper 90s,” without throwing inside, said Owings, whose fastball is normally in the 90-92 mph range.

“I consider that one of my strengths. I’m going to use that. If one gets away, it happens. I’m a hitter, too. I know a pitcher has to come inside.”

Owings uses the inside pitch off the plate to set up the high fastball with which he gets most of his strikeouts. His 85 strikeouts are second to Tim Lincecum (132) among NL rookies.

Well at least their will be alot of fans at tonights game, maybe 10,000 cub fans and 15,000 D-Back fans. I wonder if the Cubs will pitch around Owings tonight. Cmon D-Backs lets sweep these guys and then go to San Diego and sweep them.

You might want to reverse those numbers. Sad

There's a reason that Reaves couldn't land a job in Chicago.

It's just embarrassing that the Republic hired him.

I don't mind Cubs fans AT Wrigley. At least most of them...

But they have been pretty obnoxious at the BOB, and after experiencing a weekend of loutish drunken Cubs fans at Busch (who act like they own the place... with no history to back that up)... I also have grown to despise Cubs fans (in general) when they are away from their Friendly Confines.

I'm no longer sympathetic for their 99 year drought... and wouldn't mind seeing them go another century without a World Series championship Cool

I was at Wrigley Field a few years ago for a Cubs-Cardinals game. My favorite shirt of the day was worn by a Cardinals' fan and said: "Cubs suck, a tradition since 1908." You can't put it much better than that.

Uh...guys....the paragraph thing is fun to make fun of...but I didn't see anything wrong with that article.

He emphasized the D backs first......relayed a compelling story line in a way that evoked emotion, (The Drew homer/turning point, etc, I really enjoyed that) and then gave background on the opponent coming to town.

I'm all for ripping a guy when he writes bullshit...but that wasn't a bad article.
He actually sounded excited and enthusiastic for pennant fever in the valley.

I think we should look at each article on it's individual merits, regardless of what the writer has written before.

I'll post this section again, because it gave me goosebumps, (my comments in red italics)

Quote:

This weekend's three-game series between the Cubs and Diamondbacks at suddenly rocking Chase Field suddenly means something.

(immediately extracts emotion)

Not a soul in the world would have believed that not too long ago.

Remember?

Climb aboard the way-back machine and travel back to July 21, an absolutely perfect sunny Saturday afternoon at Wrigley Field; the usual sellout crowd in the stands. Temperature at first pitch: 68 degrees. A slight breeze in from right.

The Diamondbacks, though, are in no mood to soak in the atmosphere. They have lost five of six games and 13 of 17 to fall into a tie with the Rockies for second-worst record in the National League West.

(sets the stage, describes the atmosphere and emotion)

And their chances this afternoon don't look all that promising. Rookie Micah Owings is the Diamondbacks' starting pitcher. He has lost his past four decisions. This month, he has a 10.43 ERA. He's served up six home runs in his past three games.

Flash forward to the top of the eighth inning. Scored tied at 2. Owings is long gone, having surrendered two runs in four shaky innings. But former Cubs right-hander Juan Cruz hasn't allowed Chicago to score since.

Valley resident Bob Howry is on the mound for the Cubs. He strikes out Augie Ojeda, but goes 3-1 on Stephen Drew. Still, nobody at Wrigley is worried. Drew is hitting .239. Easy meat.

Uh, oh. Maybe not.

Drew hits the next pitch, a 93 mile-per-hour Howry fastball, into the right-field bleachers and the Diamondbacks haven't looked back since.

They won that day. They won the next day. The won the next six after that.

(identifies the moment as a turning point for the reader)

See, thats not so bad, is it?

My Mom grew up on the south side of Chicago. She grew up seeing White Sox games with my grandfather. For some reason though, they were all Cubs fans. Honestly, it doesn't make much sense to me, other than the fact that good seats at Wrigley can be hard to come by.

Anyway, I haven't posted in a while, so i thought i'd drop in for the gameday thread. Go DBACKS!

I grew up a St. Louis Cardinals fan on Jack Buck and Mike Shannon, so I have to loathe the Cubs. Go Dbacks!

My "theory" on Cardinals fan hatred is that the level of intensity generally is directly proportional to how close you live to Busch Stadium.

Growing up 2 hours away on Harry Caray (the good years when he was with the Redbirds), I didn't develop that hardcore "hatred" I've seen with many St. Louis natives. My hometown was about 50/50 between Cards and Cubs loyalty.. but no real feuds (back then I regarded the pesky Cubs as pitiable, at best)

I'm of course a DB fan, but I love going to Wrigley.

I actually find the fans there to be a lot of fun. Good baseball fans from a big city but still with midwestern friendliness. I've had some great baseball conversations at Wrigley, and Wrigleyville bars. I think the average fan in Wrigley knows more about baseball then the average person inside Bob/Chase...however Arizonans as a rule know baseball very well.

Penny has thrown 24 pitches without recording an out in the 1st. Hopefully his ERA can take a beating tonight.
