We're not selling goddamn gospel records here.

If Bickley wants Eric Byrnes so badly, he can date him.

Bickley may not feel the same at the end of the season when EB is looking for 20-40 mil or more.

Dude, players don't increase attendance. Winning increases attendance.

Bickley was writing the same shit last year before the Dbacks cut Gonzo. He's now moved on to salivating over Eric Byrnes. So #### predictable

Fan loss insignificant compared to effects of winning. Dbacks aren't built along the line of the "cute" Cubbies with a fan base that will pack its tiny cute stadium while their front office often trots out a "fan favorite... soul of the franchise." It's a different economic base there. (Bickley still thinks he lives in Chicago)

Besides, Josh Byrnes is no tool, as his responses (link) attest. EB WILL be playing elsewhere next season--you can bank on it.

Did the loss of Gonzo affect attendance? Do you think if they had resigned Gonzo, there would be more people in the seats? And if you do, do you think it would cover the cost of Gonzo for this year ($8M)?

In my mind there are about 3-4 things that affect attendance at chase.
1. Winning - a good team (prior years record seems to be highest correlation between winning and attendance)
2. Price of tickets
3. Day/Time of game
4. Opponent.
Thats it in my mind... sure seing webb or RJ pitch or a superstar from another team might bring an extra hundred here or there - but not enough to make a difference...

Signing byrnes for 10M a year for 4 years is a huge gamble (A mistake IMO), and is almost definately not worth the extra 9.6M that you would spend over Justin Upton.

I do think that if he was willing to sign a 4 year deal for 26-30M, i would start to think about it... but that is real low for this market... and he wont / shouldnt go less than 4 years IMO.

Bickley's tripe was LINKED ON PRIMER. That should generate a few laughs there.

Yeah, you are probably right. At the end of the day, it wont matter - he will be looking for more than that anyway. I do think he has value as part of a rotating 4 man OFer - and i dont think $6-7M per is that crazy... But again, considering the alternatives, it probably is too much for AZ to pay.

Bickley's such a dope. First line of his "article": The Sedona Red regime keeps a razor-sharp view on their budget and their future.

allstar, a truer subject line for this thread would be: Win or Lose more Fans

And Dan, it was the Giants game that saw RJ slide into 3rd base.

I got a bigger laugh out of his closing paragraph:

Quote:
But they better not get careless with Byrnes, who is more than the team's best player. His production and presence qualify him as a National League MVP candidate. And if the Diamondbacks let another heart-and-soul guy disappear, this franchise may have a mutiny on its hands.

Guess he hasn't been looking at what Matt Holiday or Prince Fielder have been doing so far this season. Although I've been more than pleased with Eric Byrnes so far this season, standing 12th in BA at .312, tied for 16th in HRs with 13, and tied for 23rd in RBIs at 43 doesn't make him much of an MVP candidate IMO.

I think you have to give the McEnroe response to this article:

"You can't be serious!"

Bickley wrote a simialr piece on Saturday. I mentioned it to quidy at the geame. His response was; Why do you read that idiot".

I should have said "Why do people go to zoos", but even though it was Baltimore playing I forgot my Menken.

It is hard to belive that Bickely has a job.

BTW, Byrnes first half v. second half career splits:

291/352/503
234/290/389

Last year

292/352/522
243/274/444

I am sure Bickley has no clue what first half/second half splits are, let alone how to evaluate ball players.

EByrnes is 17th in the NL by VORP right now, with 24.4; CUtley, MCabrera and BBonds are 1-2-3 with 36.5, 35.8, and 35.3 VORP, respectively. O-dawg is 29th overall in the NL, with VORP of 19.3

Its ok... i shouldnt have said it that way - and the fact that i had a response like that shows im pretty familiar with bickleys hack jobs too - right?

At the end of the day, that guy is just trying to inspire an emotional reaction, good or bad - he doesnt care.

I think he is very loyal to JC.

I like the zoo... Laughing

I didnt mention that is the qualifier of my "offer" to byrnes. He would have to show that he has beaten the 2nd half slide that is usual for his career to get even the 6-7M out of me... It remains to be seen if he can maintain where he is now over the course of the season (which we are all skeptical about).

Bickely:

2 bit no talent hack who ALWAYS appeals to the lowest common denominator.

Unfortunately he has a voice in this city. Not much you can do but grin and bear it.

Im curious of everyones opinions on ticket pricing. We have talked in other threads about how AZs prices in comparison to other teams, are actually pretty low.

But are they low enough for PHX.

Would it be beneficial to lower ticket prices, and get more people in there?

Im of the opinion that almost every upper deck ticket should be $5, and lower down the lines.

For me its not so much the ticket prices. I would love to sit right behind the plate or behind the dugout, but I know I can't afford that. I'm fine in the upper deck in the $15 dollar seats or in the bleachers. The thing that gets me is the concession prices. By the time you get a hot dog and a couple beers theres $20 right there. The 6:40 start times don't help me out as I don't finish working til 6, so in order to avoid missing a couple innings, theres $10 for parking. By the time I get out of the stadium, i've spent $50 and thats only if I go by myself. By the time I take a date or a buddy, it adds up and quickly.

If you ask me, the Dbacks could and should greatly benefit from light rail. I know for sure that I would go to A LOT more games if I had the option of hopping on the train and getting dropped off right in front of the ballpark. But then again, the light rail probably won't be accessible to many people unless you live somewhat close to the tracks. Parking and especially paying for parking downtown sucks.

availability of public transportation to the ballpark is a huge plus, i agree

it'll be a cold day in hell before all the auto dealers in the valley let public transportation take hold in the valley tho. more likely, they'll have I-10 go straight thru chase field so you can catch a glimpse while driving home
