Anybody know what the Padres AM station is? We're just pulling into Yuma and KTAR has given way to a Spanish talk station out of Mexico.

Thank goodness for laptop broadband cards!

Try 1090. 860 if you speak Spanish.

Geez. Thom just said the Bochy thought this game was so imprtant that hew as bringing in his closer when it was tied. I guess Thom thought they should save him for a save situation.

Hint to Thom: If you are the home team and it is tied in the top of the ninth, there will not be a save situation.

True, but how often do closers fall apart when it isn't a save situation? Seems almost like every time.

Hoffman throws an 0-2 changeup in the dirt.

Johnny "I never met a pitch I didn't like" Estrada does not swing.

Mark Grace: "Estrada manages to lay off that changeup."

Not that it matters, two pitches later...

C '07: Snyder/Hammock/Montero...

Dear Thom:
In a tie game, bringing in the closer in the 9th to hold the visiting team scoreless increases the home team's chances of winning in the last of the 9th. Enjoy the rest of the game
Sincerely,
Desert Surfer

Yeah, Hoffman's change up sucks. I don't know how he's been so successful with it all these years. Rolling Eyes

And no matter how much you try to deduct from his overall value because of his lack of throwing ability, it does not even come remotely close to negating his whopping contribution as a hitter.

Not only is he clearly the best hitting catcher of ALL TIME, but he did it ALL in EXTREME pitchers ballparks. (LA, NY, and now SD)

And Gonzo still has more career RBIs. Smile

LOL...yeah....barely......in 1500 more at bats.

Mike Piazza, catcher 147 Career OPS+
Luis Gonzalez ,corner outfielder 123 Career OPS+

Now hush up. Wink

You gotta love Dave Roberts. At 34 he's still trying to get bunt singles with two outs in the bottom of the 9th.

Hoffman consistently throws strikes and mixes up the change up with other stuff. I expect Hoffman will pitch the 10th

Thanks Driaz, TheDesertSurfer, and Catharsis. Just spoke with the border patrol agent and he confirmed that I'm SOL in the Imperial Valley for baseball. Sirius Radio only carried football and basketball play by play. You guys are my ears now. Razz

Seriously, not trying to discredit Piazza. Just trying to give Gonzo more props. Smile

I think that applies when it is a greater than 3 run situation. The theory is that the Closer needs pressure to thrive.

In any event, Thom said it in the sense the game was so important that Bochy brought Hoffman in, not that a closer is going to suck in a tied game.

Dude, I don't know whose post you read. I didn't write what I wrote to be critical of Hoffman. My point was the shine job Grace was giving Estrada on a pitch in the dirt in front of the plate.

The pitch Estrada struck out on wasn't in the dirt, though.
