Just to continue on from the other site.
I thought RJ came off as very sincere and personable. Gambo came off like a prick.
I really respected the way RJ talked about leaving AZ and his time with the Yankees. He was extremely respectful of both clubs.
He did mention something about making Shoe his bitch. |

The new uniform Randy wore looked really sharp with the black, white, and the Sedona red. The red cap looked nice with it. Now that I've had some time to reflect about it, I like the new uniforms much better than ther old ones. Just one man's opinion... |

As much as it's not going to happen, it would be completely sick if Randy came back here and proved everybody wrong. Total return to form, dominating, scowling, and front-running CY candidate.
Also, he seemed genuine mostly when talking about his back. Pretty emphatic about not being able to bend over, etc. If that had something to do with it, and he is what he was the two years before, we got a pretty good deal

After watching the interview on MLB.com, I am more than convinced we got a great deal, in all ways.
Randy wants to prove himself again. He looks great. He wants to win. He's on the road to recovery... being healthy.
Fer chrissakes the guy pitched a whole season with a herniated disc!!!
You'd have to be very very very pessimistic to not think RJ will thrive back in the desert, back in the NL, with a self-proclaimed "chip on his shoulder".
Kudos to the Diamondbacks and Josh Byrnes for taking this gamble.
I can't wait for the season to begin.
Sorry for the shitty screen capture.

I agree with Bob A. He's never going to be the vintage Johnson of 2001, the one who's skills were so taken advantage of, people complained when he DIDNT strike batters out in the double digits.
But if he can show flashes of the RJ brilliance and maintain a decent and consistent enough production to stay in the lineup (probably staying healthy and keeping an ERA under 5) he'll be worth it I suppose. If he can even do what Clemens did, I'd think Johnson would be penetrating.

That now makes one member of the 2001 team still playing for AZ. |

Randy has done way more than Clemens the last couple years. As low an ERA and as many wins as Clemens got, he still would only go 5 or 6 innings. Gotta figure RJ could provide 5 or 6 innings of lights-out throwing. Unfortunately, we're going to need more than that quite often, and that's when he starts running into trouble.

Thom Brennaman was on Gambo & Ash this afternoon at about 5:40 and said he fully expects Randy to dominate this year with the D-Backs.
He also said that NY is not just a challenging place to play, its fans and media are downright rude and impossible at times. Not, I suspect, what Gambo wanted to hear on his show. WTG, Thom! You'll be missed here.
Boy oh boy. |

The acquisition of Johnson gives the Diamondbacks a good chance to win the NL West this season despite all the money the Padres, Giants, and Dodgers have spent this offseason. Here is my early prediction for the division realizing that offseason moves haven't even been completed yet and subject to revision as events change: 1. Arizona, 2. San Diego, 3. Los Angeles, 4. San Francisco, 5. Colorado. |

I'd put Colorado above San Francisco...

The press conference can be viewed at www.diamondbacks.com
His Gambo & Ash interview that had higher entertainment value is not, to my knowledge, available online.

He is happy to be back, has a chip on his shoulder, something to prove, had the back surgery regaining a semblance his health, and the org gave him an unexpected extra year on his contract which seemed to endear him with the org.
Look out!!! |

I watched the press conference yesterday, highly entertaining. I liked how he referred to Curt a lot.
From Buster Olney this morning:
There was some surprise that the Yankees didn't land pitching prospect Dustin Nippert in their Randy Johnson trade talks with the Arizona Diamondbacks. But the Yankees were guided in their conversations by Kendall Carter, the former national scouting coordinator for the D-Backs; the Yankees just hired Carter last fall as a crosschecker, and based on his inside knowledge of the Arizona system, he recommended that the Yankees pursue Ross Ohlendorf, the sinkerballer who became the centerpiece of the deal. Executives with rival teams say that Nippert's stock has actually fallen in recent months, and say that at a time when organizations are hoarding their best pitching prospects, they have made it known they are willing to swap Nippert in the right deal. |

I just got an early version of the new MLB 2K7 baseball videogame for the Xbox 360, and Randy looks much better in the black alternate 'A' jersey. (note: I'd post an image from the game, but I could get in major trouble for that)

not sure if this article was posted/linked here...

It talks about RJ going to Melvin and saying that Webb is the #1 guy. Cool.
It also mentions this:
Quote: |
While Johnson is ahead of schedule on his return from October surgery to repair a herniated disc in his lower back, sources said a likely target date for his return is mid-April to May 1.
“I’ll be slightly behind everybody else. Am I going to be ready for opening day? I’d like to think so, but I don’t know about the steppingstones from here to there,” Johnson said.
Johnson, who could still miss most of April and still get 30 starts, had almost the exact same surgery on Sept. 12, 1996, a procedure known as a micro-lumbar discectomy, to repair a disc adjacent to the one operated on last October.
He returned from that operation April 5, 1997, the fourth game of Seattle’s regular season, and had his first 20-victory year. He has 176 of his 280 career victories since that surgery. |

If his recovery time is exactly the same, since he had the surgery in October, then that would put him back first or second week of May.
Whenever I see vauge timelines like this, I just add a couple of weeks to the latest date they are talking about.
If they are saying May 1 is the latest, I pessimistically figure May 15th, and anything earlier is gravy.
It's not scientific, but it will keep me from being disapointed or anxious if that is the actual return date. |
