Thanks, Shoe, but I think I'll stick with my original vote. :)

You may want to check with Levski, though. :)

Anyone want to change their vote in the poll about the bet?

Mid-April/early May still gives him enough time to get 150 IP. You're going down mister!

Though there have been reports Johnson might not be ready for Opening Day, he apparently has been throwing off a mound and could be available much earlier than expected. It remains uncertain where Johnson will pitch in the rotation, but Brandon Webb is expected to be the Opening Day starter.

"I just spoke to Randy and Lisa (Johnson's wife), and they're thrilled," said Barry Meister, one of Johnson's agents. "They're so happy to be back in Arizona and are so looking forward to being with the Diamondbacks.

"We're looking for a long relationship and Randy finishing his career there with a World Series patch on his sleeve."

Not a lot of room for error. You know he's going to have diminished endurance due to lack of conditioning while recovering/rehabbing.

If he's over a 3.75 ERA, odds are his innings will be down a bit, too, and he'll come up short on both ends.

I'm definitely going with Shoe on this. RJ is closer to a broken down piece of crap than a CY contending pitcher.

Hey, forgot to ask, did any of our cameras get in his face on his way to the physical? That woulda been great.

That technique is more commonly practiced by the "vibrant" press of NYC. Rolling Eyes

Thought at least one of the radio stations jackasses woulda given it a try. Plus, it was a hilarious gag when he was on Letterman.

I'm no expert and it probably doesn't matter to any parties involved except maybe the Yankees, but wouldn't that violate Doctor-Patient Confidentiality if Dr. Lee were to report to his employers, the DBacks, on RJ's health - with RJ being a private client?

I'm sure nothing was involved that would have breached ethics. Until recently, Dr. Lee would have been reporting to the Yankees.

The only way a player's team isn't privy to doctor's reports is if the player 'sneaks off' somewhere without his team's knowledge. In that type of situation, the doctor would be breaching ethics by reporting to the player's team.

Once trade talks got going, the Yankees would have given their blessing for Dr. Lee to share information with the D'backs. The 'bonus' on Arizona's end would be its confidence level in its team doctor.

Well, the information I had received was he wasn't even to start throwing till mid January, let alone be throwing off a mound already. Lets just say I have my doubts about that report, but I'll double check,.

Randy had a 4.37 FIP last year,and a 4.55 x-FIP

Unless his peripherals improve from last season, i.e. more K's, less walks, and less homers per innings pitched, there is no reason on earth to expect him to post a sub 4 ERA. Better OF defense will help him for sure, but to the tune of more than a run off his ERA? I don't think so. Thats overstating the effect of the defense in this case.

So you have to ask yourself, do you expect RJ's peripherals to improve significantly in 2007? I don't. I expect them to be close to the same, or degrade somewhat.

I am VERY happy to hear he is progressing well from his surgery, and there is a chance he may not miss too much time. It is much more important to me that RJ recover, pitch well, and help the team make the playoffs then it is that I win this bet.

I am joining a little late on this discussion, but i will take shoe's side on shoe vs levski bet.

I think this could be another blunder, in diamondbacks history.
We are losing ross ohlendorf, steven jackson who could have helped us next year.

Instead we are getting 43 old pitcher, with questionable back and he is not getting any younger.
Last year i thought, the $10 M, that we save on Gonzo will be used wisely.
Now they are wasting it on Randy. He is not worth the money we are giving him at this point in his career.

Not only D-backs are burdened by his huge salary but He was also extended next year another $10 M.

Remember Chris Capuano, Patterson, Brad Penny. Now Add Ross Ohlendorf and Steven Jackson.
AAHhhhh....Some things never change.

Two things here are not like the other three.

1) type of player returned......

2) JB still did not give up the farms best pitching prospects

Well, I meant "two players here are not like the other three"

But yes.

1. Ohlendorf and Jackson were never the same caliber of pitching prospects that the other three were

2. Dbacks have a lot more depth now than they did when they traded the first three players

Does anyone know when the press conference is today? The MLB site doesn't list a specific time that I can find. And does anyone know if I can listen to it online anywhere?
