Snakes on a plane to San Diego
Arizona (61-60) at San Diego (60-61), 7:05 p.m. MST

The Diamondbacks open a three-game series with the Padres on Friday night at PETCO Park and are hoping for a repeat of the success they had there in April.
Arizona is 5-1 against the Padres this year, including a three-game sweep at Petco three weeks into the season.

"I think a lot of times it's when you catch a team," manager Bob Melvin said. "When we caught them last time, they weren't playing very well. As a matter of fact, they were playing about as poorly as they could play, especially offensively. Timing has a lot to do with at times how you do against a team in a particular year."

When the D-Backs were last in San Diego, the Padres were in the midst of a 9-15 April.

Enrique Gonzalez will start for the D-Backs. The right-hander suffered the loss in his last outing when he allowed four runs (one earned) on five hits over six innings against the Marlins last Sunday.

Pitching matchup
ARI: RHP Enrique Gonzalez (3-4, 4.98 ERA)
Gonzalez is facing the Padres for the first time in his young career.

SD: RHP Woody Williams (5-4, 3.79 ERA)
Williams took the loss against the D-Backs back on April 26 when he allowed two runs on seven hits in 6 2/3 innings.

Player to watch
Shawn Green is a .381 lifetime hitter against Williams.

Good lord. ESPN has a 1hr special that just started for (drumroll, please)...

The Yankees/Red Sox series. Seriously. It's on right now. I'm speechless.

RHP Woody Williams (who is in his 14th major league season, and will be 40 years old tomorrow, August 19th) is 5-4 this season (117-100 lifetime). His ERA is 3.79 (4.10 career). He has appeared in 16 games this season, starting 15, with a total of 90.1 IP. Apart from pitching one inning in relief on April 5th, he lasted only one inning against the Cubs on May 12th. Otherwise, he typically will pitch into the 5th and 6th innings; and has gone 8 innings twice this season (once in April, once in May). He did not pitch between a start on May 12th and a start on July 1st. He is 3-3 in his last 10 games (going back to May 7th). He will be making his 9th start since coming back on July 1st. His only appearance against the Diamondbacks this season was a loss on April 26th at Petco Park.

Williams has given up 98 hits (10 HR) and 23 BB this season, leading to 38 earned runs being charged. He has 51 Ks this season. (Career BB/SO=646/1358) WHIP in '06 is 1.34, up slightly from his career WHIP of 1.31. This season, his GO/AO is 95/125. His '06 SLGA is .416; his OBA is .326. Lefties have been hitting .257; righties, .291. At home, his ERA is 3.19 (road 4.31). Daytime ERA is 3.66; nighttime, 3.88.

It's beginning to get down to not only "must win" time but "must start a winning streak time."

Young had a 4 hit night including a homer against Williams when Williams had a rehab start against Tucson.

Young's Major League debut and I don't have a live feed.

Bummer.

I hope he looks good on CBS GameCenter.

they need to get more creative in fucking with hairston. the sent up / sent down thing is so passe. what about telling him he had a starting job for 2 weeks, but he had to play wearing a skirt and makeup? or asking him if being a starting lfer was worth cutting off his little finger. once he did it, they could always say they wouldn't start him anyway. cheap laughs.

Why has Gonzo started everyday since crying like a little girl? Why is Green starting at all? Why can't we see 4/5 of my sig in the line-up today?

I'm more excited about Young than Drew, Jackson, Quentin, or Upton.

I also think the +glove +bat centerfielders occupy perhaps my favorite niche in baseball.

With DaVanon on the DL, Byrnes was the only CF guy on the team. Young offers more flexibility to the team than Hairston does. Here's hoping that Young justifies the Eric Davis comparisons...

I feel bad for Scotty but I also hope he finally gets his chance next year.

well, gonzo isn't coming back, and young/quentin/byrnes/hairston/davanon would be a nice and cheap outfield...
