In taking a rough look at committed salaries and raises for next year, right now we are looking at having about 25MM to spend next offseason.

We'll be losing 2 pitchers <Hernandez & Davis> likely but pending activity this season, we really won't have much else to go after. I wonder if we'll make a poke at Santana.

I think Santana signed a 4yr, $40 million contract following his first Cy Young season in 2004. So he won't be a free agent until after 2008.

thats correct, no FA until after 2008

The D backs have as much chance of signing Johan as I have of spending the weekend with Scarlet Johansen

Which is really a shame......for me.

Crap, I'd been thinking he was going to be part of next year's FA class.

Here is what I can piece together so far for 2008.

Code:
Pos.   Player   Salary
C    Snyder        800,000
1b   Jackson       425,000
2b   Hudson      6,000,000
3b   Tracy       3,750,000
ss   Drew        1,000,000
lf   C. Gonzalez   380,000
cf   Young         400,000
rf   Quentin       400,000

Bench
c    Montero       400,000
util Callaspo      400,000
util Hammock       400,000
4th  of   ?
1b-PH    ?

Rotation
1    Webb        5,500,000
2
3
4    En. Gon?      400,000
5    Ed.Gon ?      400,000

Bullpen
Closer Valverde  2,200,000   Est. Arb
setup   ?
setup   Medders    400,000
setup   Pena       400,000
Lefty
Lefty   Slaten     400,000
swing

Misc   Callups   1,000,000

Ortiz            8,000,000

                33,055,000

Assuming a payroll of 70 million in 2008, that leaves them 37 million to fill the following slots

#2 Starter
#3 Starter
Seteup reliever
Lefty reliever
swing/long reliever
4th outfielder
lefty 1b/ph

Basically I think you have to budget 25 million for the #2 and #3 guys, and then use the rest of the money to fill out the bullpen and the bench. However don't forget that guys like Jackson, and Quentin might cost a bit more should the team decide to try to buy out the arb years by that time. Maybe Young too, after he takes home the ROY hardware Wink

And don't forget this also assumes that Valverde actually has a good healthy season and remains the closer into 2008. If he can't, it's going to cost a good deal more money to plug holes in the bullpen.

There is too much uncertainty here for this to be of much value. However, I keep coming back to the same conclusion. They need to give as many innings as possible to our young starters, because even budgeting 25 million to fill 2 rotation spots doesn't get you much in todays market.

Good point.

The top Free Agent names after in 2007

Lefty's:

Mark Buerhle
Doug Davis
Tom Glavine
Randy Johnson
Kenny Rogers

Righty's

Kris Benson
Matt Clement
Bartolo Colon
Freddy Garcia
Livan Hernandez
Jason Jennings
Jon Lieber
Greg Maddux
Curt Schilling
John Smoltz
Jake Westbrooke
Carlos Zambrano

Overall, not really a strong class once again, especially when you consider Zambrano is likely to be extended before he hits FA.

After 2008 is the FA Year where there are a slew of guys:

Santana
Sabathia

Arroyo
Bonderman
Garland
Harang
Lackey
Lowe
Pedro
Myers
Peavy
Penny
Prior
Sheets
Vazquez

Of course by then, half those guys will be off the market, or no longer desireable.
