His is pre-arb and would cost more than we would want to pay.

Considering this is Oakland we are talking about, I'd say you'd have to wave goodbye to at least 2 of the untouchable list and likely at least one of them would need to be MLB Ready right now.

Harens contract details:

Dan Haren p
4 years/$12.65M (2006-09), plus $6.75M 2010 club option

signed extension 9/05
$0.2M signing bonus
06:$0.5M, 07:$2.2M, 08:$4M, 09:$5.5M, 10:$6.75M club option ($0.25M buyout) (option becomes guaranteed if Haren reaches IP incentive)
escalators can increase:
2009 salary by $0.75M
2010 club option by $1M
If Haren does not qualify for arbitration as a Super 2 after 2006, the contract's guarantee is reduced from $12.65M to $9.5M. (Haren would be likely to qualify with 2 years, 154 days of service.)

===================================

To Get Haren, you are talking about giving up one of the Golden Childs and two of our pitching prospects. Thats what Beane would demand.

I'm talking about Owings, Nippert, and Conor Jackson, or some such package.

Shoe, I'd probably do that deal if it was offered.

I love CJ but think the D-Backs would be a stronger team with Haren on the mound and Tracy at first than CJ on first, Tracy on third and Owings on the mound.

He's in a Webb-like deal until 2010 which would give us the best $$ value in #1-2 in the majors.

I would think that he'd cost Quentin or Young and CJ or Montero and Nippert and/or Owings.

Oh well, any minute Levski will be stopping by with his "not worth talking about, aint gonna happen" stamp.

I also like Owings, Nippert and Jackson for Haren. I think Tracy is way more valuable at 1st than 3rd.

You just don't want to trade Jackson because you'd have to change your name to qudy1

Haren is a better pitcher than either of those 2 and we would have him under control through 2010, very inexpensively. Pending on how well Owings develops this could end up being a bust, but it has just as good of a chance being a great deal.

I might do that. Isn't Haren in the mid-hi '90's with his heater? Good breaking stuff, too? Early 20's? Cost controlled for the next 3 seasons?

We'd be lucky if either Owings or Nippert ever got to the level that Haren is for the $. Tracy didn't have the defensive issues at 1B, and if there is any improvement vs lefties, he's above league avg, even for cost/production. We could bring up another big stick with no position prospect and put him @ 3b. Negligible drop-off positionally, and big ups in the rotation. Would Hairston be adequate at 3b?

It sucks losing CJ, but the guy isn't even on the website banner. It's Drew, Q, and Young. I think CJ was better earlier, but plateau's at a lower level than those three.

The recipe has always been 2 dominant starters and one guy that is going to bash, with solid players around him. If we have a shot at obtaining a legit #1, I say make the move, let's roll with Webb and Haren up front, re-up with Davis, and fill the last two spots with Edgar and Enrique. Barring injury, our rotation would be set for the next 4 yrs, and at a relatively low cost for the level of production.

If the team trades Jackson and moves Tracy to first, who plays thirdbase? And if they trade Tracy, same question, who plays 3rd?

They must have something in mind, if you believe the reports that he has been "dangled" for Mike Gonzalez, or to the Angels for of their starters.

But I really can't figure out who they would be thinking of going with at 3rd if they trade Tracy. Wish I knew.

IP ERA ERA+ xFIP GB%
HAREN 223 4.12 110 4.05 45%
WEBB 235 3.1 153 3.13 66%
ZITO 221 3.83 118 5.46 38%
BATISTA 206 4.58 104 4.88 52%

For comparison's sake. He also has a K/9 of just over 7, 2 CG and walked only 45 batters last year <w/ 176 SO>.

The only FA out there who could play 3rd and put up decent numbers is Huff. Ensberg also comes to mind. What about texas - Blaylock? David Bell? Aaron Boone??

Not saying these are good options - just the ones that come to mind...

Edit: Joe Randa?

Yikes... this aint a pretty list...

Here is a scouting report on him.

Assets: Has good command over his arsenal of low-90's fastball, change-up and slider. He's a big guy with strong mechanics.

Flaws:
Needs to learn how to hold runners better and bear down with runners aboard. He's improving in retiring left-handed hitters.

His ERA+ the last two years has been 120 in 2005 and 108 in 2006, and He has very good periphs, excellent K/BB ratios and good ground ball rates. But he has given up 57 homers in 440 IP. Sure, he pitches in the AL/DH league, but he also pitches in a pitchers park.

You have to be careful not to overate him. Haren is a decent #2 or good #3, but he is not an ACE.
