Well, this thread is fairly obsolete. Obviously Reynolds massive decline with the Glove, which was already weak, has negated any positive value derived from his 113 OPS+. He is what he is as a hitter. I still think he could have a couple of years with somewhat better batting avg than he's had the last two years. But if he doesn't start playing better defense and raise that BA soon, he'll be out of the league in a couple of years. Anyway....reason I came back here was to revisit the Dean Palmer comps I made prior to the 2008 season HERE and in the comments section HEREThought for shits and grins I'd go ahead and comp them through the same number of PA's in their career. Reynolds reached this number of PA's about a year younger than Palmer, (27 vs. 28) as Palmer missed some time due to injury. Code: PA BA OBP SLG BB SO HR RBI Fldg Runs Reynolds 2866 .237 .330 .479 331 949 153 422 -53 Palmer 2866 .247 .323 .472 269 707 145 421 -53

So that's why you never see Mark Reynolds and Dean Palmer in the same room together.

Dean Palmer is actually the number two comp for Reynolds through age 26. Number one is this guy, but I doubt anyone here thinks Reynolds can turn his career around and approximate a hall of famer.

This was my favorite comment after the Minor League Baseball article:
I am not high on him at all... In 4 years I say he is washing cars in AZ. I dont see him ever cutting his Ks down. And now that major league pitchers have seen him, he will be overmatched. I think his BA and obp take a big hit.

I enjoy Reynolds because he's one of those guys who secretly sucks by old-school numbers (.220 batting average, 195 K's, 26 errors at first base) AND new-school numbers (.321 OBP, -26.2 UZR, 0.5 WAR). He bridges all eras.

He bridges all eras. To be fair to Reynolds... he had 26 errors at 3B, 5 at 1B. And a new school # shows he had a 119 OPS+ good for a 3.0 oWAR, but that severe regression defensively killed any value he has/had. Good news for him, he's in the AL now, so if the O's dont want to continue hiding him at 1B, then they can use him as the DH.

Wow. I knew he was a bad defender but that bad? Quote: The worst defender at a single position was Mark Reynolds, who cost the Orioles 29 runs with his work at the hot corner. http://ht.ly/7lYEq

David Hernandez since September 1, 2011, (incuding post season, and through tonights game at Colorado
19G, 19.2 IP, 19 H, 13 R, 13 ER, 5.95 ERA, 3 BB, 22K's, 4 HR.
The bb/k ratio is stellar...but too many hits and homers for that amount of IP
OTOH, Reynolds was a DH tonight and went 1-4 to RAISE his avg to .160

Despite my initial objections, the trade definitely worked out for the better. Addition by subtraction.
