Not dominant, but throw out his first appearance (1/3 of an inning, 3 ER, including the only two home runs he's given up on the year) and you have a fairly solid reliever. Definitely better than I thought he'd be.

Too many AZ pitchers are at the top of that list.

Because Bell is a proven closer silly.

Matt Lindstrom has 2.59 ERA, and a 168 ERA+. His K rate is down, and he is walking a lot of guys, so has a 1.372 WHIP, but he hasn't allowed a homer yet this year.

Heath Bell meanwhile has the Highest Zone Contact Rate of any reliever in baseball.

Back in the day we dubbed Casey Daigle, "Moose Dick", cuz his FB was straighter than a Moose's Dick in mating season. Well....Bell has officially taken over the nickname as far as I'm concerned. I'm calling him Moose Dick from here on out, cuz that shit is just straight, and hittable, and just no longer fast enough to get by guys sitting on it.

I wonder how much input/arm twisting Towers had in that decision.

Bet it went something like this:

KG: We can't keep running Bell out there.

KT: But that will make me look bad! I'm the GM - you work for me; and I'm telling you that Bell remains as the closer. Got it?

KG: You da boss, boss.

Just decided to give a look at our 9th (or extra inning) save chances. I wondered why I had such anxiety of the 9th inning and I found why these numbers are truly amazing: There have been 26 chances, the opponent has brought the tying run or in 1 run games got tying run on in 25/26 chances 96.2%. They have got the Winning run on base in 14/27 chances or 51.9% of time. This is only the 9th or close out inning not including a few of DH30's blown 8th inning saves. The only time where the tying run didn't reach or come up in 9th was a 5/27 outing against the Pads a 1-2-3 inning.

While I completely agree that Bell needs a break from the closer role... can anyone who actually gets to watch most of these games pin point anything specifically that Bell is now doing differently.

Had a nice 2 month stretch where he was very reliable from 4/6 to 6/7... 2.22 ERA, 6 ER in 25.1 IP, 5 BB, 28 K, 0 HR

Now in this 5 game plummet the walk and homer rate is through the roof... 4 BB in 5 IP and of course, 5 HR.

In other news, Heath Bell remains the closer.

http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd ... i&c_id=ari

"Pretty much the way it is, he's going to be our closer," D-backs manager Kirk Gibson said. "We want to get him turned around."

Heath Bell came in last night and surrendered the HR that tied the game and caused the 18 inning fiasco, so... he's brought in today with the bases loaded.

First hitter he surrenders a 2-run double.
