Arizona should've signed Cueto or Zimmerman and then used the non-Inciarte prospects from the Miller trade to address other needs. They still wouldn't have had a top-15 payroll in that scenario and it would be a clearly superior team to what they have right now.

Sure, KK can dig through his couch cusions for another 20 million

Every independent data point we have suggests that the D-backs are doing very well: Forbes said the franchise's value has more than doubled since 2011, MLB revenues are at an all-time high and growing, they have a new TV deal, etc. Kendrick has repeatedly slashed payroll when the team didn't contend during the last 10 years, but has not increased it now that they can contend. Loria has demonstrated that it's not necessarily in the best financial interest of an owner to win in MLB, and I strongly suspect that the D-backs are in that position right now. My guess is that they only want to maintain the appearance of being a credible franchise in order to bolster their case for another taxpayer handout on a new ballpark in the coming years. It's harder to make an argument that you can't compete with the Dodgers and Giants in your current ballpark if you outperform them.

If the D-backs weren't doing well financially, why is Hall still here? Attendance hasn't grown during his tenure despite the massive upswing in downtown Phoenix. The team certainly hasn't been successful on the field.

I don't follow baseball to root for the owners to maximize the return on their investment. Just because Kendrick has set an internal budget doesn't mean that it's reasonable.

Brandon Crawford got 7 hits last night in a 14 inning win against the Marlins. First MLB player to do so since Rennie Stinnett in 1975, and 4th in MLB history.

At the start of play today, the Giants are 13-6 against the D-backs this year. They're a combined 18-7 against Brewers and D-backs, which means they're only 59-60 against the rest of baseball. They're +60 RS/RA overall, but +46 of that is from the D-backs and Brewers. Also, another +10 of their runs come from the three-game sweep of the Rays.

It is hard to understand why Bochy continues to keep Santiago Casilla in the closer role as he continues to blow them. Despite being over 500, the Giants are a hard team to try to follow. Casilla replaced Romo as a closer, and it seems it might be time
to give Romo another chance. Eventually, Bochy probably wants to make Hunter Strickland the eventual closer, but he woefully lacks experience.

Not likely they will repeat their even year championships at this rate. The way they are going, they are in danger of not making the playoffs.

I'm so glad we avoided that potential Melancon landmine.

Giants still look like a much better team than the D Backs on Paper

2017 ZIPS

This will come as no surprise of course, as not many here need to be disabused on the notion that 2016 was due to injuries and a couple of bad pitching seasons.

MAD BUM INJURED IN BIKING ACCIDENT
our local news tonight reports that Mad Bum, on an off day in Denver, headed out to the wilds to do some
road biking and an accident occured which will put him out of action for an estimated 6-8 weeks. He must
have thought he could do whatever he wanted and nothing would ever happen to him. It did. More details later
