The quote about how the owners have failed by hiring a "good old boys" FO could easily be said of KK and DHall....

An article about Tulo and the Rockies going forward:

Rockies Should Plan for the Worst

The new GM, from what I read elsewhere, is supposedly some Ivy League guy big into numbers who was already in the organization. Strangely, from what I've heard talking to most Rockies fans, they're displeased with this, as he was hired from within and they wanted a clean break with the old mess. Kind of makes me remember when people here were pushing for Rizzo as a new GM after a terrible season -- a similar disaster, similar disappointments, but most people (on here at least) wanted the guy from within. Just an interesting detail that stood out to me.

Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado lived the play of the night, of the year, and possibly of his lifetime

Wow! :o:shock::o

Amazing catch; and almost an amazing double-play.

On one hand, it's never bad to see impact players like Tulo leave the division. But on the other, maybe he isn't an impact player anymore and Zona's only chance for success also includes division rivals saddled with dead weight.

But now that they've moved Tulo, the Rox should also ship CarGo out and reconstruct the roster with a much payroll flexibility as possible.

The first 4-5 pages of this thread were basically all Cargo all the time....and a lot of debate about his contract.

Interesting player who has looked well worth it sometimes, and not so much others.

Cargo player page

He followed up his Big 2010 season with a very solid 2011...when he was on the field.

Playing in just 127 G, he put up 4.3 WAR. While his batting line dropped off from 2011 quite a bit, it was still good enough for 125 OPS+ and he put up positive values in defense and baserunning. But the knee issues that were going to haunt him the next few years started to crop up

In 2012, playing in 135 G his batting line was fine, and pretty much in line with 2011, 122 OPS+, but he was moved off CF for good and had a large negative rating on defense, so his WAR took a big hit, dropping to 1.6 WAR

In 2013 he put up great numbers ...when he played. He missed 52 games, but still put up 4.9 WAR with a 144 OPS+, matching his big 2010, and was back in black in a big way for defense and baserunning

2014 was a disaster. Playing in just 70 games he had his worst year since his rookie year, putting up just a 89 OPS+ and -0.7 WAR.

In 2015 he got off to a slow start, but has been very hot lately, and especially has surged with his HR totals. He hit his 37th last night and his OPS+ is back in the 120's. 15 of his 37 homers are road homers, so it's not all coors field. He is closing in on 4 WAR again

Since signing the contract that begain in 2011 season, he has averaged just 110 games per year, although that should go up a bit by end of this season. Despite that he has almost 14 WAR and a 123 OPS+ for the 40 million he has been paid in that span. So well worth the money.

He has two years remaining on the deal for 37 million. By current free agent WAR values he only needs to produce 5-6 WAR for the Rockies to break even. It seems pretty clear that as long as he's healthy enough...he's a 4 WAR player, and can still go even higher. But he could go down at any moment with his chronic knee issues.

Overall, I think you have to look at this extension as a success, despite his health issues. If he were a FA after this year he would definitely get more than the 2/37 he is still owed.

Oh one last point.......there were comparisons to Upton

Since 2011, Justin has a 126 OPS+, Cargo 123. So about the same. Upton has 19 WAR to Cargo's 14. It's all about health. Justin has stayed on the field far more averaging 149 games. Per 650 PA they are dead even, 4.4 vs 4.3 WAR

Justin has been paid 50 M during that same span by the way...about 10 M more than Cargo. He is almost certain to get more than Cargo's avg annual of 18.5 M the next two seasons.
