Makes sense.

Goldschmidt joined Marlins outfielder Giancarlo Stanton and Reds first baseman Joey Votto as finalists for the National League Most Valuable Player award. This is Goldschmidt’s third nomination for the award in five years — he finished second in both 2013 and 2015.

The Diamondbacks have never had an MVP in their 20-year history.

The NL MVP will be announced Thursday, November 16.

Sadly he's almost certainly going to be a bridesmaid once again thanks to Stanton's gaudy home run totals. I hope I'm wrong!

Honestly he is probably not the most deserving of the MVP this year. I'll be happy for him if he wins it, but I could not make a solid argument that he was the best player in the league in 2017.

His total crash and burn in September put a big dent in his year.

Goldy didn't crack the top 10 in either fWAR or BBREF WAR, and just barely cracked top 10 in oWAR, tying for 9th.

WAR isn't everything, and you don't really need to split hairs too much to the right of the decimal point.

But when the gap is in the 2 WAR territory between our favorite player and the best in the league, it's pretty hard to justify.

I don't think he wins it this year. He wasn't even the MVP of this team in August and September.

I honestly don't understand why Goldy wins this over Votto

Votto better at BA/OBP/SLG, , OPS+, oWAR, Linear Weighs batting runs, etc etc, and NOT BY SMALL MARGINS EITHER.

He was better, by A LOT

Basically they should just call this the RBI award and be done with it. Never mind that Goldy had 40 more runners on base for him in total, and 46 more runners in scoring position for him despite having 42 FEWER PA than Votto.

Runners on Base

Code:
        ROB   1st   2nd   3rd   RISP
Goldy   443   210   159   74   233
Votto   403   216   105   82   187

I thought that Votto was going to be a lock for the Silver Slugger, he was the best all around hitter in the NL this year and no silver slugger?

Shocking that he has never won one of them either.

I think Goldschmidt wins this in a year he probably shouldn't. It's the whole playoff team advantage that cost him against McCutcheon in 2013.

Same thing that cost RJ his Cy Young in 2004.

2013 McCutchen had 8.1 WAR to Goldy's 7.1 WAR , and the gap in oWAR was even bigger: 7.4 to 5.7

They were separated by on 3 OPS+ points, (Goldy 160, Cutch 157) and Cutch was every day centerfielder .

He should have won on that basis alone. Being on playoff team certainly played a role, but that MVP was not a mistake.

There needs to be a better definition of "Valuable." Stanton was clearly the most "Outstanding" but a guy could hit 1.000 and hit 200 HRs, but if his team still loses he was not particularly "Valuable." I personally thought Goldy played himself out of contention in Sept. But when I saw it was him, Stanton and Votto there is no question who was more "Valuable" to his team. I figured Arenado or Turner night be in the final three and their teams won, so I thought that would do it for Goldy. But, among what turned out to be the final three, he was clearly the most "Valuable."
