Lefty Anthony Banda is also a part of this deal. He's going to the Rays.

Steven Souza, an outfielder, hit .239/.351/.459 with 30 homers for the Rays last season. He'll make $3.5M this season and has three years to go before free agency.

The Yankees got 3B Brandon Drury in a 3-team trade. TB sends Souza to the Diamondbacks. NYY sending one prospect to TB, one to Arizona

He will make 3.55million$ this year, arbitration in 2019, FA in 2021. A quick glance over his stats look like he is what was mentioned in the Dyson thread (a power RH bat to compliment him). I am not really sure about defensive stats, can someone give me a defensive comparison?

Here is the MLB Trade Rumors thread.

Don't know much about Souza. Will be interested to hear everyone's analysis of him. Quick lookup shows good power and solid defense.

I like the deal. Improves the weakest position with Peralta shifting to LF. Could he replace A.J in CF next season?

oh and i guess this means Chris Owings is your starter at 2nd.

I like it.

Souza is a good power/speed guy, good defense, high walk rates. Nice trade.

Bit more worried about giving up on Banda than Drury to get him though.

Arizona is also giving up two players to be determined to Tampa and are receiving pitcher Tyler Weidner from NY.

If the PTBNLs are scrubs, we may have just pulled off a heist. I dig this write-up on the kid.

Souza is like a bizarro Adam Dunn. Not quite as many HRs, slightly higher average, sky high K rate, good OBP. We're back to a 3-outcome hitter.

He is a decent defender. Above average. That makes him very different from Dunn in a fundamental way.

I was keeping my comp to offense only, because I'm fascinated by his slash lines. He doesn't even really line up to Dunn in that way, either, maybe closer to Reynolds than Donkey with the bat.

Glad to see the D-backs are finally starting to convert their horde of tweener/superutility-types into more useful assets.

Steven Souza, who grew up in the Seattle area, reminds me of another righthanded right fielder, former Diamondback Mitch Haniger, who now plays in Seattle.

The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Souza, who is 20 months older than Haniger, has three years of team control while the 6-foot-2, 215-pound Haniger has five years of team control.

ZiPS projects 2018 WAR of 2.3 in 542 plate appearances for Souza and 1.9 in 517 plate appearances for Haniger. Steamer600, which assumes 600 plate appearances for each outfielder, projects 2018 WAR of 1.6 for Souza and 1.9 for Haniger.

I just put up a Fan Post at AZ Snakepit focusing on the park difference and how they impact triple slash numbers. Check it out.

From MLB Trade Rumors:

"The D-backs aggressively pursued Souza as a fallback after losing J.D. Martinez to the Red Sox. (Tampa Bay received MLB-ready left-hander Anthony Banda, second base prospect Nick Solak and a pair of players to be named later who, according to ESPN’s Keith Law, are “more than just throw-ins,” though their identities are not yet known.)"

Don't like the sound of that.

Why are they projecting such a big decline in WAR for Sousa this year? 4.2 to 1.9 in a kid seemingly trending upward and going to a hitter friendly park. Weird.
