He's been doing really well for the Diamondbacks since getting called up.

His defense at short has looked decent, and he has rated positively at SS this year. He has been hitting, slashing 284/363/477 in 124 PA, good for a 110 OPS+ . Expect regression though. Rest of Season projection 284/331/401 (Steamer/Zips combined). The OBP and Slugging just not likely to stay where they are right now.

Royce Clayton is the closest comp I could find for him through age 23 and similar playing time. It actually seems to fit pretty well at first glance, but hopefully Marte is ultimately a better hitter than Royce was. On the other hand, from age 24-27 Clayton played great defense , amassing +59 rDRS but just a 78 OPS+ in over 2100 PA.

Royce averaged 2.4 WAR during those 4 seasons. I could see Marte averaging 2.4 WAR over the next 4 years as well...but I would expect the shape to be different, despite the CURRENT similarities. I'd guess Marte's value skews more towards bat. But we'll see. You can never be too sure how players will develop. 8-)

Here is an example of Satanwin's law that eventually on every thread Royce Clayton will be mentioned. At that time (i) the person mentioning the name loses the debate (unless it is about Alex Cintron) and (ii) nothing worthwhile will be said after the mention.

I love it. It's like sending up the bat signal . Guaranteed to flush you out. 8-)

I think the Marte is already better than Chris Owings. I think Marte should be the starting shortstop, and if Owings makes his way back during the post season, he should be a utility player. He won't get to hit at all before regular season is over, so tough for me to see him contributing during the post season, but I could be wrong.

In any case, to me, the playing record, AND my eyes, seem to indicate that Marte is best bet for starting shortstop in 2018. He is already better than Owings and Ahmed, and 2 years younger than Owings and 4 years younger than Ahmed

Owings or Ahmed could be a nice trade piece in the offseason, either individually or in a package. By that I mean trading one of them and keeping the other as insurance/depth.
