Hearing #Dbacks 3B coach Matt Williams will not be retained. Also can confirm @danbickley report that Mark Grace is out as well.

I think this is yet another good sign about Hazen and his autonomy. These guys were almost certainly here because the D-backs won the WS in 2001, rather than because they were the best-available options. All things being equal, I don't like hiring franchise icon-type players for substantive positions because it can be hard to be objective about them.

It seems like the D-backs had/have a whole lot of people employed because of sheer inertia instead of their present-day competence.

If I had two DUIs and arrests, Frys would be taking a not so long hard look at my employment status.

MW9, is ok in my book. I am sure Ill get flamed but he is just that. Meh.

Interesting they would fire the assistant hitting coach and not include the hitting coach.

Now they have my attention.

These are substantive and positive moves. . . not because I have anything against either person. Because, as Robert points out, these were sentimental hires, not hires of 'excellence.'

Maybe - just MAYBE - this time it IS different.

Agreed. He was very well thought of and was a big league manager. He certainly was a qualified 3rd base coach.

Dbacks will bring back pitching coach Mike Butcher for next season.

Are you fucking kidding me?!! Out of everyone and HE'S the one that gets to come back?

It could be the case that there isn't a better option available. If I was to make an argument for retaining Butcher, it would be that several of the most important young pitchers - Bradley, Ray, Rubby - did improve in 2016.

That said, it's hard to have much enthusiasm for this.

he's got a contract through 2017, so it would have to be an actual firing, as opposed to just not retaining services after contract expires, (Grace/Williams)

That means they would have to pay for two pitching coaches at the same time if they replaced him.

Not saying this is a monetary decision, but the above two points, the optics of firing vs. just not renewing and the $ calculation are potential factors.

Fire him. Pitching coaches can't make that much money that it's an issue where they're so incompetent.

I really don't get this. It's not as if this guy just had a down year and has been successful elsewhere. He's been bad at every stop.

The one person that we all thought wouldn't make it through the offseason and he is still going to break all the pitchers.

The last of the original Dbacks has gone.

Mets hire Glenn Sherlock to replace Tim Teufel as 3rd base coach

Dave Magadan (hitting), Mike Butcher (pitching), Dave McKay (first base) and Ariel Prieto (coach/interpreter) will return as coaches.

I thought Fetters should have replaced Butcher mid-season as pitching coach. I wonder if that won't happen sometime in 2017.

I don't fully understand the backlash of letting Sherlock go. I mean, yeah, he's been with the organization since the beginning, but longevity doesn't mean you're an amazing, irreplaceable coach. And particularly if things aren't fully working, I'm more than OK with trimming fat and bringing in new voices.

There's been backlash?

My post, (I know you didn't mean me) was just pointing it out.

It's not like he was canned, just in job limbo until he got a better offer from the Mets.

I've seen a lot of people really upset that he left, and lots of blaming the ownership for not giving him more opportunity or committing to keeping him around (like how could they do more outside of make him manager?)
