Why is this organization paying Dave Stewart? Is he just a fall guy for the other three GMs?

My first though exactly. The GM isn't even in on the phone call or decision to make the biggest free agent signing in team history?

The initial reporting about this didn't make it seem like LaRussa was too involved with the transaction, either.

It's a total surprise to LaRussa, but Hall and Kendrick had been chatting about it for 7-10 days. I bet the reality of the decision-making flowchart for the D-backs looks hilarious.

Is Hall running the baseball ops section of this team? No wonder the moves are ass backwards.

Hopefully better than this from 2013

"We have enough money for one more signing, who do you like?"

"I have a name"

"So do I"

"Cody Ross!"

"SAMESIES!"

"I have no idea how a legend like Cody Ross would still be available, but thank goodness he is!"

Simplistic analysis:

Greinke 206M, 6 years mid market, low payroll team. Age 32-37 seasons. Two outstanding seasons, 6 yrs apart, < 3 WAR Avg others, none above 4.3.

Kershaw 215M 7 years large market, high payroll team, Age 26-32 seasons (opt out at 30) 6 consecutive 6.2 or better WAR seasons.

What is the likelihood of even one season justifying that contract, without even considering the certainty of it being an albatross before it ends? More like a continuation of the team's tradition of paying veterans for past performances, redoubled.

This contract will never be a winner in terms of WAR/$, which makes it even stranger that the organization didn't commit more resources to winning in 2016.

Greinke's been great on the road and awful at Chase this year. I was poking around his splits the other day and saw that he's been bad at Chase over the course of his career. I hope the organization did their due diligence on him and have good reason to believe that he'll be able to succeed in the place where he's supposed to make half of his starts.

The D-backs should've implemented a humidor a long time ago and maybe even adjusted the dimensions. I will never understand why a team with a hitter's ballpark doesn't do everything in their power to move their park towards at least playing neutral. Why add the extra wear and tear on your pitchers?

He was actually really good at Chase Field when he was with the Dodgers too

I would hope that the D-backs didn't place too much stock in how well Greinke pitched against the players they were sending to the plate between 2013-2015.

I do remember one start with the Brewers that Johnny Mac took him out! But with the Dodgers he was pretty damn good.
