I like it but it's also kind of a garbage showing. Out of how many innings? And what had he done to to the same point last season?

Greinke started slow last year for about the first month. Then he went on about a 2.5 month run and won about 10 straight decisions. Then the shoulder and other injuries happened and it went sideways. I think the long stretch in the middle often goes unmentioned or forgotten when people go to the narrative of how bad ZG was last year. It was a down year overall, but he had a long stretch that was very good. He seems to be in a similar mode to that solid stretch now, which is pretty much in line with his performance prior to coming here. I think the Greinke now is the Greinke that has always been, and will continue to be for the foreseeable future, absent of injury.

The narrative that he's been a total disaster since arriving is and was false. He hasn't been anything like Miller or Ortiz. He had a long run of great pitching last year when healthy and is doing the same now. People are conflating the team's performance with ZG's last year. The team was a disaster. ZG had an inconsistent year, but had a great stretch once acclimated and pre-injury.

The thing about great players as they age is that the hot streaks get shorter and the cold streaks get longer as they age, but when they are hot, they still look like the great player they are, so it's easy to feel like they could be great for extended periods again. (10 starts not extended....I mean pretty much a full season)

Hopefully Greinke can be great a full season. We could really use that.

Different positions, but certainly a cautionary tale for the Goldy extension. Would be tough to compete while having not one but two albatross contracts occupying such a large share of payroll.

True, if Tomas is gone by then.

Tomas would prefer to be gone by then. He really should be able to do better than the 2yr/$32.5M option. And if he can't, we obviously shouldn't want him at that price either, but are stuck with him nonetheless. It's a lose/lose situation for the dbax.

To do better he'll have to improve his 110 wRC+. If they don't move him by the deadline, which would probably involve eating part of his contract, they may be stuck with him for the duration.

Zack Greinke’s hot start is among one of the best in D-backs history

Wow. Brandon Webb, 2008: record after his first ten starts; 9-1. That's great pitching. Losing him as our ace really hurt the team; maybe almost as much as his shoulder hurt him.

Greinke is indeed having a much better start to this year than some (certainly I) expected from him, given the serious concerns about his health and how many bullets were left in his arm/shoulder.

But the analytical rigor of that 19-season comparison is pretty lacking. Yeah, Greinke's start this year might be among the 19-best ever for this franchise. But it might not be in the top ten. So a bit of hyperbole there (and in the comments, haha).

Houston is so close they can taste it.

They want a starter at the deadline.

How much of the contract would they be willing to eat? All?

How many prospects could we get? Lots?

It never hurts to ask. The worst they can say is no.

Probably true, but with the right offer for Greinke they be nuts not to, considering the next 4 years.

The only way that happens is if the team completely implodes like the 2006 team. That team got to 34-22 then went 3-20, going to 37-42 to pretty much drop out of serious contention.

This team just lost 3 in a row, and is now 34-25, but I don't see any Jason Grimsley's hidding in their locker on this team, so kinda tough to see this team falling apart like that.

They are still 4 up on the Cubs and 5.5 up on the Cards for the WC.

If a month from now they were under .500, but Greinke's ERA was still around 3.00, maybe they consider it, but the other point is it seems no matter how good he does, the D Backs will have to eat significant money to move him. So very difficult to trade him due to myriad factors. The first of which being desire. I don't think they want to. They first have to want to trade him before you can even imagine further scenarios.

I suspect the reluctance to consider moving him comes from KK/DH, since eating close to 9 figures to get a decent return for him is too painful to consider. It is much easier for them to defer crossing that bridge until Father Time reduces it to a lesser sum, even though there may not be any salvage value then. The down side is as long as he's on the team I doubt any significant payroll increase will happen, since they are probably accruing funds to cover his future cost that could be in the current payroll.

I think you overestimate the Stros desperateness. They are the class of baseball and have already said no to the White Soxs' high demands for Quintana. They may add an arm but they're not going to panic and do something stupid.

Diamondbacks placed RHP Zack Greinke on the paternity leave list.

There's a lot in this article, so I'm throwing it in the first one I can find.

http://deadspin.com/pat-neshek-is-pisse ... 1818584721

Takeaways:

1. Neshek is kind of a weirdo jerk a-hole, can't wait to stomp the Rockies out in the playoffs.
2. Livan Hernandez was also kind of a weirdo jerk a-hole
3. Our aces ain't got time to be signing autographs for other MLB players

Seems like Neshek is just another typical autograph hound/stalker type. He kept chasing Greinke like Greinke owed him something.

What a douchebag.

Someone's fifteen minutes of fame is about to expire, if it hasn't already...

Which would have been a better response: to tell Greinke what you think of him after he turned you down, and then trash him online; or say, "Okay, thanks anyway," and let it drop? The second way at least leaves the door open for a future change of heart.

That assumes a modicum of maturity and wisdom.
