Hellickson skipped

Pitching coach Mike Harkey said right-hander Jeremy Hellickson did not make his previously scheduled start in a minor league game because of a dead arm, adding there is no concern about Hellickson being ready to make his first scheduled start of the season.

"He got some treatment a couple of days after his last start and in his bullpen he was a little dead," Harkey said. "It was a perfect time to do it now in March than do it in April."

Good thing the regular season doesn't run until the end of September or thereabout. :?

Wait a minute...

Good thing he's not the type that would conceal an injury to improve his chances of getting a big arb raise...

Another minute please.

Thought I'd update how the guys given up in this deal have started their minor league seasons

Justin Williams , playing for Bowling Green in the Midwest League, is off to a very slow start. Through 12 games and 43 AB's he's hitting .163/ .213/ .256 .469 OPS with 2 walks and 12 K's.

Andrew Velazquez playing for Charlotte in the pitcher friendly FSL is off to a much better start, hitting .321/.357/.358. Not showing the pop he showed last year tyet. Just 2 doubles, 1 triple and no homers yet. 3 walks against 12 K's, and no SB yet against 2 CS.

He was pinch hit for in the 2nd inning though tonight, so don't know if he got hurt.

I think it might have been a better move to sign FA Aaron Harang than trade two prospects for Hellickson.

Even better would be to just let Delgado or Chafin start.

I wonder if they didn't feel the need for an innings eater for this season. Although Hellickson doesn't fit that mold based on past.

Hellickson as innings eater ? Ha. Wouldn't surprise me if they viewed him that way, since they got everything else wrong about the guy. He a 5 and dive guy. And its a long slow death march just to get to 5.

In my limited time seeing Hellickson pitch so far, my big takeaway is that he doesn't have an out pitch. His numbers seem to back me up on that.

His changeup is supposed to be good, but the rest of his pitches are meh at best from what I have seen.

Discovered quite by accident. From 2013 to 2015

Not the same type of pitchers, one is a GB pitcher, the other a FB pitcher. The other biggest difference is that Cahill has more control and command problems and is bad at controlling running game. (Also more WP). Hellickson has had much more difficulty with the HR ball, which is to be expected of a FB pitcher.

But the net results since 2013 are almost identical. Weird.

Code:

Player              GmScA ERA+  FIP OPS+ QS    IP  G   R  ER  BB  SO  ERA HR   BA  OBP  SLG  OPS SB CS
Trevor Cahill        46.3   78 4.19  118 15 275.0 66 163 150 129 215 4.91 24 .276 .357 .415 .772 37  6
Jeremy Hellickson    46.6   75 4.26  121 16 275.2 52 163 157  86 217 5.13 37 .280 .334 .456 .790 14  6

Seems to be doing OK tonight, but the Marlins also can't hit their way out of a wet paper bag right now, either.

For real though, I think it's safe to say that 2 runs over 6 innings is pretty decent progress for him.
