Last year, in his age 24 season, Andrew McCutcheon hit .216/.330/.392 .722 OPS 9 HR 35 RBI over the second half of the season. His slump was a big reason why Pittsburgh slumped in the 2nd half last year and fell out of contention. Do you think the Pirates considered trading him because of that slump ? He had a good first half, so for the season he ended up with a respectable but not great line of .259/.364/.456 .820 OPS with 23 HR and 89 RBI. Now look at him. With Votto getting hurt, Cutch is now the favorite for NL MVP. His numbers are video game crazy...hitting .371/.423/.651 21 HR 64 RBI In 2010, in his age 25 season Matt Kemp was having a terrible season. From June 2nd through September 27th, a stretch of 105 games and 413 PA's, Kemp hit .226/.288/.377 with 12 HR and 46 RBI. Only a final 5 game stretch with 5 homers and 12 RBI semi rescued his season batting line, as Kemp finished up at .249/.310/.450 28 HR 89 RBI Here is a comparison of Justin Upton and Kemp.....Upton career to date, and Kemp through his age 25 season Code: Rk Player OPS+ PA HR SO BB G AB R H 2B 3B RBI IBB HBP SF GDP SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS 2 Justin Upton 116 2745 98 650 278 663 2408 385 663 135 26 333 30 35 22 47 72 34 .275 .356 .475 .831 4 Matt Kemp 113 2469 89 581 176 626 2260 349 645 107 24 331 17 8 24 46 104 39 .285 .336 .472 .808
Of course Kemp went on to become the best player in the game for 7+ months until the hamstring injuries this year. In his last 199 G, 842 PA's he's hit .322/409/.609 1018 OPS 51 HR 154 RBI So with examples like this before you , I have to ask you a serious question ? ARE YOU INSANE ?You are on the verge of making a terrible mistake, and you and the organization are doing it for all the wrong reasons. As the song goes.... "I wish you would step back from that ledge my friend:"

I think his desire to trade Upton isn't based on logic and statistics. There is some 'personnel' reason why he wants Upton out. He started shopping him the moment he became GM and Upton made him look like a fool with his 2011 numbers. Now that he's slumped Towers feels vindicated and is stepping up things.

Upton's not "his guy" and he needs to build a team with "his guys" to prove, as Frank Sinatra so famously coined, "I did it my way."

KT is insane if he wants to trade Upton, I don't even know what his motives could be.

I understand what you mean, but wouldn't he be worrying about Kennedy's struggles too? He had nothing to do with the IPK trade and he could be making him look like an enigma too. I guess IPK has a pretty cool beard for a Caucasian though.

Great stuff, Shoe. Preach it! Hopefully, KT will see the insanity of this.

In my wildest fantasies, I envision Kevin Towers reading Shoe's post and taking it to heart. However, I frequently get flooded with movie flashbacks... and the one coming to mind instantly is a Moneyball scene. I'm getting visions of Kevin Towers asking "Who's Fabio?"

Anyone have Towers' email address? Presumably it's ktowers(at)dbacks.com ? We should all send a copy of Shoe's post to him.

Anybody else find it peculiar that the GM is playing mind-games with the youngest player on the team?

Good post, shoe.
Send a cc to Mr Hall. Maybe we could send Susan Powter to KT's office and she can shout, "Stop the Insanity!"

Good work guys, let's hope we can make an impression.
Earlier today I linked this thread to @dbacks, doubt the intern who monitors that page even cares.
