This guy's been a key to our success this year. And has made huge strides, particularly at the plate.

I could see this coming last year. He was still struggling, then started taking the ball to all fields and his average started to go up. This
has continued into this year and he is getting better all the time. He still gets suckered on the outside running slider but overall, is growing
by leaps and bounds as a hitter.

His versatility in the field is also a huge asset, as is his ability to take charge on the left side of the infield. It's nice to know we have two
capable stoppers out there at SS

This may just be a snapshot in time, but Chris Owing's much ballyhooed development and break out appears to have been a mirage.

Code:
PA    BA    OBP    SLG    BABIP  OPS+  BB   BB%    SO    SO%    HR   HR%
2016   466   .277   .315   .416   .334   89   20   4.30%   80   18.70%   5   1.10%
2017   368   .276   .309   .453   .324   90   17   4.60%   87   21.70%  12   3.30%

Other than a handful more HR, and his strikeouts reverting to career avg, (last year was career low K rate), everything is almost exactly the same.

The limiting factor to Owings upside has ALWAYS been his plate discipline. I have harped on this from the beginning. His walk rates in the minors were so low, it would be very unusual for him to develop even league avg walk rates, and the history of guys with walk percentages this low has always been limited upside. His ability to play multiple positions, run the bases well, and have his hot streaks at the plate make him a player with value. But when he goes cold and the hits don't fall, he has NOTHING to fall back on. He can't help the team with his running if he can't get on base, and he can't get on base if he'll seldom walks.

Look at the image in this link. Other than his callup season with just 61 PA, he has been consistently and persistently below average at taking a base on balls. And it will probably never change:

Fangraphs Link

His overall career numbers and future projections are still weighed down by his disastrous 2015. But that season was clearly about the shoulder. 2014, 2016, and 2017 are very much who he really his.

And thats NOT a bad player. Don't get me wrong. But he's a 90 OPS+ hitter who is a slightly below league avg defensive short stop and worth anywhere from 1 to 2 WAR per season.

He's also making 2.3M this year and is an ARB 2 player next year and probably makes 4M in arbitration.

I think he is a good bet to be moved during the off season.

EDIT: Here is Owings updated Updated Comp List original table

Jean Segura sitting right next to him through age 25 and just prior to his breakout last year is encouraging.

The avg WAR total for the 5 comps for their age 26-27 seasons, (Owings next two ARB seasons before free agency) is 1.72 if you include Segura, and 1.25 if you don't.

So the 1 to 2 WAR value estimate for Owings "true talent level" seems to be accurate enough.

Ketel Marte is a cheaper version for the next couple of years of probably exactly what they can get from Owings. I am now very convinced Owings is moved this next off season

Fractured finger so that will end his season most likely.

From mLB trade rumors
Quote:
Diamondbacks infielder/outfielder Chris Owings underwent surgery on his right middle finger on Friday, the club announced. Owings previously had surgery on that same finger July 31, a day after he suffered what proved to be a season-ending fracture. The latest procedure “was performed to ensure continued proper and complete healing,” the D-backs stated.

I wonder if CO doesn't get a lot of reps in the OF in ST. Maybe even some 3B.
