Political parties should be done away with altogether. THAT would be really cool.

We need more political parties, not less. But it can't happen under the current first-past-the-post system. Proportional representation is essential to producing a range of platforms that appeal to the widest swath of the electorate possible. And it forces compromise because no party holds power exclusively.

There's a reason why the parliamentary system is the preferred democratic apparatus throughout the world.

So that like minded people can support someone to represent their interest in government. The problem is now the 2 major parties are more or less run by the extreme left and right, leaving the vast majority of the population without true representation. Like oversize financial institutions can be too large to let fail, both major parties have become too large to govern, with money preventing competitive alternatives to develop, or either of the majors splitting, which would concede power to the remaining major.

Bernie was a socialist, tagged as a independent only because he didn't join the Democratic Party. He became one because he needed their financing, and following to have a chance to win, as a Socialist he would have had no chance, with or without political parties. Without parties the process to elect president, or even a senator or governor in a large state would be absurd.

Sanders is a Democratic-Socialist. The distinction, as Donald Trump might say, is YUGE. Basically Sanders is FDR v2.0

With the positions held by the two major party nominees, I don't know what anybody is anymore.
