Stopping at a nearby gas station convenience store this evening, I witnessed an event that couldn't have more perfectly burst stereotypes.

Behind the counter was a tall 30ish Caucasian male clerk with tattoos fully covering both arms and up his neck along with several piercings. Standing to my right was a teenage black male with braids extending out from under his wool pullover cap accessorized with baggy pants. To my left was a 40ish Mexican man in dirty jeans and t-shirt, obviously at the end of a long day's hard work. Up from behind me walks a well-dressed white-haired 60ish Caucasian male who pauses at the counter and then walks out the doors to the right. The clerk gets a wide-eyed look and yells out "Hell no, HELL NO!!" as he runs out from behind the counter and out the door and bangs on the back of the car of the senior man who had begun to drive away. "Sir, are you going to pay for that?" the clerk demanded. The driver said, "oh," got out of his car, and walked back into the store. I said, "Shoplifting?" and the clerk said "Unbelievable!" as the senior male said "It's just a bottle of Gatorade" without so much as a hint of an apology. He paid for it and walked back out.

Looking at the amazed faces in the store, I said "Classic example of don't judge a book by its cover" and saw a collective group of smiles in return.

Such a perfect set of stereotypes spun upside-down, I would have expected to see it on SNL rather than at the local convenience store.
