Still one of the cooler SI covers, especially mine - got it autographed by each guy on the cover at the UA's Meet the Team when I was teenager...

One thing I like about the new playoff format is that we're getting our New Year's Day back. No more of this spreading the bowls out over the course of a week, the majority will be played on Jan 1 or 2 again.

Erin Andrews is moving to Fox Sports. SI.com has learned the network hired the former ESPN personality to host a new 30-minute prime-time college football studio show, which premieres Sept. 1 before Fox Sports' coverage of Hawaii at USC. Andrews will also have other assignments at Fox Sports, including a role in its NFL and MLB coverage.

Under my proposed 8-team playoff system, we would have had the following BCS bowl games, with winners feeding into NCAA Football Final 4:

FIESTA: #1 Florida State vs #15 UCF
SUGAR: #2 Auburn vs #7 Ohio St
ORANGE: #3 Alabama vs #6 Baylor
ROSE: #4 Michigan St vs #5 Stanford

Given that there may not be 6 conference champions that deserve to be in the 8-team tourney, I'd reduce the number of automatic bids from the top-6 conf champs to the top-5 conf champs (with 3 at-large qualifiers for other conf teams and IND's) while maintaining the limit of teams per conference included in tournament to 2. That would result in the following matchups:

FIESTA: #1 FSU vs #10 Oregon
ROSE: #4 Michigan St vs #5 Stanford
ORANGE: #3 Alabama vs #6 Baylor
SUGAR: #2 Auburn vs #7 Ohio St

The teams bypassed by a lower ranking team would have been Mizzou and South Carolina (the 3rd- and 4th-place teams in the SEC).

All I know is that I would be fired up to be watching those BCS bowl games with the winners advancing to the Football F4.

A full morning of good games with the Rose Bowl and Fiesta Bowl still to come... Happy New Years.

Both teams in the PAC 12 championship game got totally out-played and out-coached. Pathetic showing.

Under my revised College Football Playoff Format - Automatic bids to Power 5 Conf Champs & Best G5 team, plus 2 at-larges (not from same conference) - the 8-team match-ups would be as follows (assuming highest ranked team in conference wins auto bid):

Sugar Bowl: #1 Miss St vs Marshall
Orange Bowl: #4 TCU vs #5 Alabama

Fiesta Bowl: #3 Florida St vs #6 Arizona St
Rose Bowl: #2 Oregon vs #8 Ohio St

National Semi-Final #1: Sugar Bowl Champ vs Orange Bowl Champ
National Semi-Final #2: Fiesta Bowl Champ vs Rose Bowl Champ

National Championship: Semi-Final #1 winner vs Semi-Final #2 winner

Of course the match-ups and positioning of the Bowls in the bracket will change with the rankings, but so far it works out close to the ideal 1vs8/2vs7/etc and I don't think there would be too many complaints (except from Baylor and Auburn). The Big10/Big12/Pac12/SEC conference champions all maintain their traditional bowl tie-ins, which, to me, is one of the most important elements of the college game. Although the G5 representative is going to occasionally cause some ranking problems, ensuring a pathway to the title for EVERY team is crucial for maintaining the credibility of the system. You just can't close the door on 60+ teams simply because of their conference affiliation, and there will also be years when the G5 representative is entirely deserving, like when BosieSt was knocking on the door of the title game.

I really don't see what is so difficult about this. It may not be perfect, but you must sacrifice the attachment to a top-8 team tournament if the bowl tie-ins are to be retained. I'd rather preserve the bowl tie-ins and go with an almost-perfect bracket, than sacrifice one of the best traditions in the sport, in the effort to determine the true national champion on the field.
