Looking at ASU's schedule for the rest of the season, I see only a possibility of two more wins. Those possible two wins are Oregon State and UofA. There is a strong possibility they don't win another game this season. Well, at least they'll be in a position for a top draft pick. Oh wait, it doesn't work that way.

I'd rather go in the tank and get started on a rebuild than manage to win just enough to survive for another season and only delay the inevitable. The shine is off. Both coaches were only able to win with their predecessor's players, neither coach has the goods to build a consistent contender. Time to reshuffle the deck.

FBI brings Armageddon to college basketball, and it's just the tip of the iceberg

Very sorry to see this.

School rivalries aside, a lot of people are going to be hurt by this. Very sad.

College basketball has been out of control for many years now. I think the death penalty for the schools involved is in order. I don't mean that as any ill-will toward UofA, but rather as someone who is getting tired of big time college sports in general. I think college football deserves intense scrutiny as well, in addition to the private sector's involvement along with the media. Money is ruining amateur college athletics. The private sector's influence below the college level needs investigation also.

I've gotten to the point where I would much rather watch women's sports, because it's still closer to amateur than men's sports. I know that is changing, but for now it's less about money.

Relieving the institutions of the burden of the antiquated notion of “amateurism” would be a more effective path. It is fundamentally wrong to keep the labor in poverty while everybody else is getting rich. And the ncaa’s justification that they can’t pay the players because then they wouldn’t be free will never hold up to labor laws. The NCAA is going down before any of the universities. I don’t give a shit if the players get some $$ to help family with bills or to drive a Range Rover. If they’re going to class, they’re students. Students have jobs they get paid for. This isn’t an issue if they don’t hold the athletes to more stringent rules than their classmates.

This is pervasive throughout college sports, it isn’t going away with sanctions, just like it didn’t before.

And I’m *suuuuure* your program at (insert school name here) couldn’t possibly be engaging in these activities...

I also heard a good legal point: the fbi has no jurisdiction enforcing NCAA bylaws and no federal laws were broken. This isn’t their playing field.

Sorry, but if the FBI is involved these coaches/agents/reps are toast. The NCAA can't sweep this under the rug if the feds are involved. Saying "everybody does it" is a BS argument. These guys were caught. Punish those who are caught and maybe others who haven't been caught yet will stop. Paying student athletes is a whole other argument. They have to play by the current rules or suffer the consequences.

If this brings the whole amateur thing to the center, great. I'm all for giving pro prospects some compensation. Make big ticket college sports essentially the minor leagues. That could give true student athletes (aka, those who are going to college for an education) a clearer path as well. Better or smaller schools could bow out of the competition and better serve their students and minor league schools like Auburn and Alabama can stop pretending they have their students' best interest in mind. Anything that lessens the NCAA's power is great by me.
