One of the K's was like 8inches down and away, but he did foul off the other two in the same location. Tough break though; I watched up until the 11th inning on MLB.tv today.

Greatest season by a 19 year old ever ? Maybe can argue Ott 1928, or Cobb 1906. Thats pretty much it. Nobody else comes close really.

Is the WAR difference between Ott and Harper from the defensive side? Not sure if that's included in that calculation somehow. But just looking at the lines for offensive numbers, Harper doesn't have a clear advantage in any categories aside from SB and 3B. Just doesn't seem to pass the eye test. Regardless, Harper had a fantastic season and will be fun to watch for years.

Here are Ott and Harper's WAR lines
Code:
Year G PA Rbat Rbaser Rdp Rfield Rpos RAA WAA Rrep RAR WAR oWAR dWAR oRAR Pos
1928 124 500 25 -0 0 4 -5 24 2.3 14 38 3.7 3.4 -0.1 34 *O9/4758
Code:
Year Age Tm Lg G PA Rbat Rbaser Rdp Rfield Rpos RAA WAA Rrep RAR WAR waaWL% 162WL% oWAR dWAR oRAR Salary Pos Awards
2012 19 WSN NL 139 597 15 2 2 14 -2 31 3.4 17 48 5.0 .524 .520 3.4 1.4 34 500000 *89/7 AS
1 Season 139 597 15 2 2 14 -2 31 3.4 17 48 5.0 .524 .520 3.4 1.4 34 500000
You can see that Ott beats Harper in batting runs by 10. But Harper has favorable baserunning, DP, and fielding numbers compared to Ott. He also picks up 3 runs of positional adjustment for playing 92 of his games in CF. The replacement level value for Harper is a little higher too. (Stronger leagues get a little bump).
So like I said originally, maybe Ott's 1928 beats Harper's 2012......but you have to completely ignore defense, baserunning, positions played, and league context to get there.

war is also a type of counting stat. The more you play the more positive value you have a chance to accrue. The difference is the value accrued is relative to replacment value. If you suck for two months after a hot start your war wil drop even if you tack on a few more hr and rbi to your totals. (kubel had higher war total on july 15 then he ended season with)
Part of harpers value was that he played more than ott of course. Kind of hard to accrue value when You dont play.

Just ran into Bryce Harper at Wal-Mart! I felt like an idiot that this is the first time in about two weeks I wore a cap other than my Nats cap though.

When he first came into the MLB, I really didnt know what to think of him. Everything i heard and read he was cocky.
But.....
I must say after watching the story espn had about him i def saw him in a different light.
Now this.
He stays the course of being like this and how he was in the ESPN show. He will be a great player but a better person.

That's a Clown Statement Bro
Quote:
We've got one of the best second basemen in the league in Danny Espinosa," Harper told reporters.
http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/11161 ... -nationals
Pretty clear solution is move Harper behind the plate and solve all of Washington's problems.
