Linky

Marlins have a new stadium of course, but still, if they get 1.6 B what does Ken get when he sells ? And if they get a sweetheart deal on Res land in 3-5 years and then sells, he would get 2 B easily, which is 9 times what he and the other investor paid to take over majority interest in the team.

And the PHX economy will be doing better, too. Hopefully somebody with real money steps up and pays to put a winner on the field.

The bids are dropping, as the group which included former Florida governor Jeb Bush has withdrawn.

Baseball execs say Marlins bidders shrinking; price tag hovers at $1B

Jeter's group remains in the hunt; but according to the report, MLB would rather that a local businessman with ties to the community - and a net worth greater than one billion dollars - be the successful purchaser.

Derek Jeter has a handshake agreement with Miami Marlins, may not call the shots

Now this is interesting.

Quote:
Meanwhile, it’s still unclear if Jeter has indeed come up with the necessary cash to complete the transaction, Major League officials tell Fox Business.

“Jeter can’t be the control person; he has been told that by the MLB,” said one baseball executive.

That said, people close to baseball commissioner Rob Manfred said he might be willing to compromise on such matters given Jeter’s prominence in the sport. “The league wants to take care of Jeter and thinks he should play a big role in running the team,” one baseball executive said.

My, my, my. MLB might "compromise" in order to "take care" of Derek Jeter. So, if you're a rich former major league player, with all of $20M invested in a group seeking to purchase a MLB team, but a very, very marketable face and name, MLB will do for you what it wouldn't do for an ordinary investor?

Very interesting...

A done deal probably because Luria managed to drive every other bidder from the field.
